I approach design by considering how the intersection of mediums can produce effective solutions. Unique and engaging results can take form by creating space between different binaries, such as the traditional vs digital form. In this way, there are always opportunities for innovation, experimentation, and exploration, and this flexibility of graphic design is what excites me.

As a love letter to my late grandmother, I wanted to create an animation that conveyed my relationship with her through the Korean diaspora. Oftentimes, stories of first-generation children and their immigrant parents/grandparents that I have encountered are primarily centred on the difficulties they face with cultural barriers, and understandably so. These experiences that are specific to families of a diaspora significantly shape their domestic life and relationships. Subsequently, there is a lot of emphasis on how these generational challenges have impeded on their ability to express affection towards each other. However, I wanted to reinterpret these boundaries (such as language) in a way that highlights how beautiful things can still emerge as a result of these conditions. It would be unrealistic and overly optimistic to claim that my animation conveys an instance in which these barriers have been overcome, as this is not always possible. Rather, it showcases how intimacy develops in these “non-normative” instances, or in ways that otherwise might have gone unnoticed.

Reference Material

Family photographs were the source material for all of my illustrations. The found images were converted to outlines and printed onto pages that were later filled in with acrylic paint. After scanning each painting, they were converted into frames for my animation.
